🇩🇪 Day 5 – Activity 1
🗣️ Gespräch über deutsche Feste – Talking About German Festivals
🎯 Learning Objective
Listen to a friendly dialogue between Anna (native German) and Ravi (from India) as they talk about famous German festivals and traditions.
🗣️ Dialogue
Ravi: Hallo Anna! In India, we have so many festivals — Diwali, Holi, Eid… How about Germany?
Oh, us too! In Germany we celebrate many festivals throughout the year.
Ravi: Really? Which one is the most famous?
The most famous one is probably Oktoberfest in Munich!
🍻 Oktoberfest
Ravi: I’ve seen pictures — everyone wears traditional clothes, right?
Anna: Ja genau! Die Männer tragen Lederhosen und die Frauen ein Dirndl.
Yes, exactly! Men wear leather shorts and women wear a traditional dress called Dirndl.
Ravi: Do people drink a lot of beer there? 😄
Of course! But it’s not only about beer — it’s a family festival with music, rides, and food.
🎄 Christmas & Winter Markets
Ravi: What about winter? I heard German Christmas is magical!
Anna: Oh ja! Weihnachten ist sehr wichtig in Deutschland.
Oh yes! Christmas is very important in Germany.
Ravi: Do you celebrate with family?
Yes, always with family. We decorate the Christmas tree, eat cookies, and drink mulled wine.
🎆 New Year’s Eve (Silvester)
And on New Year’s Eve we set off fireworks and wish each other a Happy New Year!
Ravi: Frohes neues Jahr! 😄
🌸 Spring Festivals
Ravi: Do you have festivals like Holi — with colors and fun?
Not with colors, but we have spring festivals and carnival – people wear costumes and celebrate in the streets!
Ravi: Oh, like our Holi parade, just without colors!
Ravi, you should visit a Christmas market this winter – you’ll love it!
Ravi: Ich werde! Danke, Anna!
I will! Thank you, Anna!

- 🍻 Oktoberfest actually starts in September!
🇮🇳 Tip for Indian Learners
Festivals are a great way to make German friends! Try greeting them with:
👉 „Frohe Weihnachten!“ (Merry Christmas!)
👉 „Ein gutes neues Jahr!“ (A good New Year!)
👉 „Prost!“ (Cheers!) 🍻
Germans appreciate your effort — it builds instant connection! 💬
